JPMorgan Chase Foundation Helps Fund CPO
Summer Experience

CPO Update

The summer of 2009 was an exciting and artistic time for young CPO residents. Thanks to a grant awarded from The JPMorgan Chase Foundation to the King Arts Complex, funding was available for  twenty-eight children between the ages of four and twelve to attend the King Arts Summer Camp located on the east side of Columbus. The camp used the Harlem Renaissance as a central theme that focused on the value of literacy and its importance to every aspect of “performing” in life. Participants spent the nine-week program preparing for a final performance that took place on the evening of August 7. The show highlighted dance, poetry, and dramatic excerpts from the Harlem Renaissance era. Campers performed to the music of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Langston Hughes, and Billie Holiday and also had the opportunity to display their original art work and poetry for their family and other members of the community. In addition to the final performance, the children were involved in cultivating a community garden as well as contributing to a mural that is proudly displayed outside of the King Arts Complex.
